History & Tradition

The present, co-educational Saints Neumann Goretti Catholic High School (Neumann Goretti) was formed in 2004. Along with its predecessors St. Maria Goretti for Girls and Southeast Catholic/Bishop Neumann/St. John Neumann for Boys high schools, SNG boasts a proud 85+ year tradition of Catholic High School education in South Philadelphia. In addition to Diocesan priests and lay persons, our legacy schools were managed and staffed by the Norbertines, over seven congregations of religious sisters, including IHM’s and SSJ’s, and religious brothers, whose spiritual traditions are the foundation of and continue to influence our current culture. The current campus is the former St. Maria Goretti campus in “East Passyunk Crossing”, a safe and thriving neighborhood where the old-world meets new-wave to create the backdrop for a dynamic and diverse school culture.

We strive to advance our tradition of service to the community by cultivating an atmosphere of continuous growth and improvement. Ss. Neumann Goretti has experienced a 20% growth in overall enrollment over the last six years and has the highest level of parent engagement for three consecutive years in the annual Archdiocesan high school parent survey, consistently scoring above the Archdiocesan average for satisfaction in all categories with especially high marks for communication and technology integration.

In this spirit of growth, we have partnered with organizations such at The New Teacher Project, the Philadelphia School Partnership, the Connelly Foundation, the Alliance for Catholic Education at Saint Joseph’s University, and the Healey Foundation to enhance our curriculum, teacher development, enrollment management, and fundraising. We were fully re-accredited by the Middle States Association in 2018. The current student body is racially, ethnically, religiously, and socio-economically diverse. As you will read below, we consider our diversity as fundamental to our mission and core values.
