On Wednesday, May 25, students from the NYSeed & Insurgo program, along with their program instructors, spent the afternoon enjoying a hands-on, immersive experience in the art and business of the food industry at Vernick Food and Drink in Rittenhouse, voted 2017 Best Restaurant in Philadelphia by Philadelphia Magazine, and winner of the 2017 James Beard Award for Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic. Students were greeted by chef-owner Greg Vernick, co-owner Julie Vernick, general manager Ryan Mulholland, and the entire Vernick Food and Drink team, who provided a first-hand view into the nature of the restaurant business, including front house/customer service, business management and kitchen operations. Students were invited to train under top industry chefs to prepare a gourmet meal, from selecting and preparing the ingredients, to final display and presentation. Students finished the afternoon by enjoying their hand-crafted meal and participating in a Q&A with the members of the Vernick team.
