SNG’s New Athletic Director

Saints John Neumann and Maria Goretti Catholic High School (Saints Neumann Goretti) is pleased to announce that Patrick Devenney, a 2018 graduate of Immaculata University, has been named the school’s new Athletic Director.

Mr. Devenney, for the past year, has been a member of the school’s faculty teaching Health/PE and Kinesiology as well as serving as the junior varsity head baseball coach. He quickly established himself with students, parents, and staff during a challenging year in the midst of the pandemic as a respected faculty member and coach with an admirable work ethic and academics-first mindset. Prior to his joining Saints Neumann Goretti, he was on the faculty of West Catholic Preparatory High School, where he also was the head baseball coach.

“It truly is an honor and a privilege to steward the next chapter of Saints Neumann Goretti athletics, and I am extremely grateful to the leadership team for their belief in me and our shared vision for the future,” Mr. Devenney said. “As someone who has admired the athletic program for quite some time, I am excited to join the team and anxious to get started!” Mr. Devenney will formally begin his new role on Tuesday, July 6th, 2021.

Mr. Devenney graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Management/Business Administration from Immaculata University (Immaculata, PA) that will undoubtedly serve him well as he moves Saints Neumann Goretti athletics forward. Mr. Devenney was a successful Catholic high school and Catholic university student-athlete. Professionally, he has collegiate experience with game-day and fitness center management, a variety of baseball coach and instructor experiences, and international experience with the Irish National team as a player who also engaged as a youth instructor through their community programming. Mr. Devenney has also earned various certificates in training, conditioning, and nutrition which will position him well to work with all stakeholders in our community to contribute to an overarching vision of health and wellness for all students at Saints Neumann Goretti.

Joseph McColgan, President of Saints Neumann Goretti, stated, “We undertook this search with great urgency and found strong interest from a robust candidate pool, enabling us to act quickly and with great confidence. I’m proud to say we found our leader.”

Mr. Devenny is enthusiastic about the opportunity to impact students and the community on a larger scale as he takes on his new role. He says that “athletics have played an integral role in his life for as long as he can remember, and he finds himself at games even on days when he is not teaching or coaching.” As a coach and leader, he looks forward to lending his expertise to others in his new capacity.

The hire comes just 14 days after long-time SNG athletic director, Charlie Szydlik, retired on June 18th, 2021, after almost 21 years of service to the Archdiocese of Philadelphia Catholic schools as a football coach and athletic director. We thank him in particular for his service as Athletic Director at Saints Neumann Goretti during a time of growth for our school community. His sharing of his experience and wisdom were extremely valuable assets to our community during his tenure. We wish Mr. Szydlik, his wife, and his family the very best in his retirement.

Please join us in offering prayerful best wishes and welcoming Mr. Devenney to his new role.
